Locus supports London’s 'information revolution'

The Locus Association has welcomed Mayor of London Boris Johnson’s announcement of the creation of a ‘London Datastore’ website, which is set to make freely available previously unavailable data for re-use by the public.

The initiative, announced on 7th January as part of a campaign to boost the transparency and accountability of City Hall, will be formally launched at the end of January 2010 and will contain over 200 different sets of information.

Audrey Mandela, Locus Chairman, said “Locus believes that enhancing access to Public Sector Information (PSI) for re-use brings economic benefits as well as improving services to citizens. We are therefore encouraged by City Hall’s announcement and look forward to seeing the datasets that are released on the London Datastore at the end of the month. This move by the Mayor of London sets an excellent example which we hope to see repeated across Government in the coming weeks.”

Notes for Editors:

1.   Locus was established in autumn 2005 and formally launched on 26th January 2006. The Association’s President is a former Director General of the OFT and Oftel, Sir Bryan Carsberg.

2.   The Association exists to raise awareness of, and promote the development of, a healthy and competitive private sector in relation to PSI. Locus acts as a forum for exchange of information, keeps its members up to date with latest policy developments, and provides advice and guidance. Our members recognise the potential of PSI, but also the benefit of uniting to address some of the challenges and pooling resources to meet them. It is worth noting that the particular nature of the PSI market structure, where individual private sector organisations have limited influence, lends itself to the development of a trade body.
